What to Watch For

Warning Signs

  • Any previous suicide attempt.
  • Acquiring gun or pills.
  • Giving away items, putting afairs in order.
  • Weight Gain or Loss
  • Feeling hopeless / helpless
  • Withdrawing from family and/or friends
  • Sleeping too much/ too little
  • "I can't do this anymore"
  • "I hate everything"
  • "Life is not worth living"
  • Talking about ending it all
  • Reckless behavior
  • Loss of interest in favorite activities
  • No sense of humor
  • Irritable
  • Frequent medical complaints
  • Abusing alcohol or drugs
  • Change in work or school performance
  • Preoccupation with death/dying
  • Excessive guilt
  • Low self-esteem
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Sudden happiness/resolve of situation

Verbal Cues

  • I've decided I don't want to live anymore.
  • I've decided to kill myself.
  • I wish I were dead.
  • I'm going to end it all.
  • If (such and such) happens, I'll kill myself.
  • I'm so tired of life.
  • I just can't go on.
  • It would be better for everyone if I just got it over with.

Situational Factors

  • Being fired/expelled
  • Forced to move
  • Loss of a major relationship.
  • Death of spouse, child, best friend, mentor, pet.
  • Diagnosis of an illness.
  • Sudden loss or impending loss of freedom/criminal
  • Fear of becoming a burden.
