What to Watch For
Warning Signs
- Any previous suicide attempt.
- Acquiring gun or pills.
- Giving away items, putting afairs in order.
- Weight Gain or Loss
- Feeling hopeless / helpless
- Withdrawing from family and/or friends
- Sleeping too much/ too little
- "I can't do this anymore"
- "I hate everything"
- "Life is not worth living"
- Talking about ending it all
- Reckless behavior
- Loss of interest in favorite activities
- No sense of humor
- Irritable
- Frequent medical complaints
- Abusing alcohol or drugs
- Change in work or school performance
- Preoccupation with death/dying
- Excessive guilt
- Low self-esteem
- Inability to concentrate
- Sudden happiness/resolve of situation
Verbal Cues
- I've decided I don't want to live anymore.
- I've decided to kill myself.
- I wish I were dead.
- I'm going to end it all.
- If (such and such) happens, I'll kill myself.
- I'm so tired of life.
- I just can't go on.
- It would be better for everyone if I just got it over with.
Situational Factors
- Being fired/expelled
- Forced to move
- Loss of a major relationship.
- Death of spouse, child, best friend, mentor, pet.
- Diagnosis of an illness.
- Sudden loss or impending loss of freedom/criminal
- Fear of becoming a burden.
